Bill presented to help curb nursing home abuse and neglect in Kentucky

admin January 28th, 2008

January 25, 2008

Kentuckians for Nursing Home Reform is hoping to push through a bill requiring the state to set minimum standards for staff numbers in nursing homes, similar to the laws in effect for day-care centers, according to The Courier-Journal.

One woman witnessed several examples of Kentucky nursing home neglect and abuse while dealing with the problems her mother faced while living in assisted care. Once she found her mother lying on the floor after a fall, unattended, and on other occasions the woman was left drenched in urine waiting for someone to help her to the restroom.

To combat nursing home neglect and abuse, the bill would require one nurse per 21 residents during the day, one per 29 in the evenings, and one per 42 residents overnight. The current law does not clearly define what a “sufficient” number of staff is to adequately care for nursing home residents.

The Leaf-Chronicle reported that freezing rain caused a fatal Tennessee auto accident Tuesday after 7 a.m.

A man hit a patch of ice while driving, slid into a tree, and passed away at the scene. School systems were hoping warmer temperatures would melt the freezing rain by the time students were to be sent home.

To avoid more Tennessee auto accidents, some school systems operated on a delayed schedule, and a city’s transit system was shut down.

More suits brought in Kentucky environmental harm case in CSX derailment

admin January 23rd, 2008

January 18, 2008

The Courier-Journal reported that three more lawsuits have been filed in a Kentucky environmental lawsuit concerning a train derailment almost a year ago.

Nine lawsuits have been filed to date concerning the Louisville environmental harm incident, including one seeking class-action status.

The lawsuits state that CSX was negligent in the Jan. 16, 2007 crash in failing to warn residents of potential danger in a timely manner after the accident. About 500 residents were evacuated, some taken to hospitals, when a train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed and spread a thick, black smoke across several miles.

Although the National Transportation Safety Board has yet to issue an official cause of the derailment that caused the Kentucky environmental damage, CSX has put the blame on a bolt.
