Important Safety Communication Regarding Multiple Sclerosis Drug Gilenya

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an important safety communication regarding the multiple sclerosis drug Gilenya.  Recent studies indicate that the drug may cause serious cardiovascular side effects to patients.  Specifically, the drug has been linked to incidents of dangerously low heart rates and blood pressure.  At least one fatality has been connected to the drug.

Gilenya is used to treat and minimize flare-up episodes of multiple sclerosis and also to delay its progression.  The drug was approved by the FDA in the fall of 2010.  Since that time, it has been approved for use in Canada and throughout Europe.

Two United States Soldiers Injured by Use of Dietary Supplements

The United States Army is investigating what role the dietary supplements Jack3d and OxyElite Pro played in the unexpected death of two soldiers.  The two soldiers used the products while exercising and both suffered fatal heart attacks.  Supplements such as these are marketed for their ability to boost a person’s energy and metabolism.

Both products contain an ingredient, popularly known as DMAA.  Because it acts as a stimulant, DMAA has the potential to cause numerous side effects including: heart attack, liver and kidney damage, and the most extreme cases, death.

What Are The Impacts Of Off-Label Drug Use?

January 25, 2012

An article released Monday by News Channel 5 says that as many as one in five prescriptions written in the United States today are to treat something for which it is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). But are the risks associated with “off-label” drug use worth the benefits?

In order for a drug to receive FDA approval, it must first go through a rigorous process of testing and clinical trials. Then a report is made on which health conditions the drug can successfully treat. As long as doctors closely monitor patients, they are allowed to use their discretion to prescribe medications to patients to treat conditions the drug may not necessarily be approved for.

The practice can be beneficial in some cases. Take for example the drugs used in chemotherapy to treat cancer patients. While the drug may only be approved to treat one type of cancer, it can successfully kill off numerous types of cancerous tumors. Often times though, the practice puts patients at a great risk of serious side effects.

Antipsychotic drugs used to treat dementia patients also are a prime example. In numerous cases it was found that while successful at treating the condition, the drug put patients at an increased risk of death.

State Lawmakers Push For Better Regulations On Hormone Therapy

January 18, 2012

Several Tennessee state lawmakers are pushing for a crackdown on the growing hormone-replacement industry. The surge for better regulations on the amount and types of hormones that are given at hormone replacement therapy centers comes after numerous patients of one Nashville facility have complained of terrible side effects resulting from the medications they were given there. The patients also told News Channel 5 investigators that they never saw a doctor before receiving the medications.

One of those patients was a state representative and his wife from Pegram, Tennessee. They stated they began hormone-replacement therapy after seeing a commercial praising the numerous benefits it can have. They never experienced those benefits.

Instead, the lawmaker says his wife experienced horrible side effects as the result of testosterone levels becoming too high in her body. Dozens of other patients reported similar reactions to the medications they were given.

The experience prompted the group to push for lawmakers to approve House Joint Resolution 104, which asked the Tennessee Medical and Nursing Boards to set a standard of care for the hormone replacement industry. A week later, a task force created by the board made a policy that requires all medical professionals to personally examine patients before prescribing hormones, and then requires a strict regimen of follow-up examinations as well.

Tennessee Teen Warns Others Against Taking YAZ® Birth Control Pills

December 21, 2011

A 19-year-old White Bluff, Tennessee, woman is using her story to warn others of the risks of taking the birth control pill, YAZ®. According to MSNBC News, she suffered from a severe blood clot in her lung several years ago after she started taking the medication to help with painful menstrual cramping.

The woman says that three years ago she started taking the medication and almost immediately began to feel the side effects. She says that she was constantly throwing up and it was getting harder to breathe by the day. Finally, when she began to have terrible chest pains, she went to the hospital where doctors were puzzled by her condition. Nearly a year later and numerous visits to different hospitals and specialists, doctors made a connection between the blood clot they found in her lung and her usage of YAZ®.

Now, the woman has joined nearly 10,000 other women nationwide who are suing the drug’s maker because of similar complications. She says her condition has cost her the ability to get a free college education by scholarship at a prestigious university and must live with the condition, as surgery to remove the clot is too dangerous.

The Tennessee YAZ® Drug Injury Lawyers with Hughes & Coleman say some of the other conditions associated with YAZ® include:

  • Strokes
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis
  • Pulmonary Embolism
  • Heart Attack

The firm recently discussed these and other dangers that could possibly be associated with the drug in a recent commercial.
