Tennessee Accident Victims Plagued By Solicitation Calls
December 7, 2011
Car accident victims across the state of Tennessee have enough to deal with handling claims for repairs, medical expenses, and insurance without being hassled by business solicitors. Unfortunately, News Channel 4 uncovered the disturbing story of a victim’s information being retrieved from accident reports by multiple telemarketing agencies.
It all began when a Nashville, Tennessee, man was involved in an early November accident, in which no one was hurt. Days later, he began receiving phone calls from what sounded like non-profit victim advocate groups. As he began to track the numbers online, he found the calls were coming from various telemarketer groups trying to get referrals for a chiropractor, who would then refer the victim to a lawyer. One of the businesses attempting the scam was Westgate Health Services Capitol Branch–also known as Capitol Chiropractic–based in Nashville.
There is nothing illegal about telemarketers getting numbers from accident reports. But by law, they must wait thirty days to call the victims. The state board said they have disciplined several chiropractic practices in the past for this infraction and will look into the new allegations.
