DePuy Hip Recall

DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. a division of Johnson & Johnson, has issued a recall of two hip replacement products because of their high failure rate leading to the need for a second surgery.

 

The Replacement Products Recalled

DePuy has recalled the following:

•   The ASR XL Acetabular System – on the market since 2004

•   The ASR Hip Resurfacing System – on the market since 2003 available only outside the USA

DePuy recalled the ASR Hip Resurfacing System and the ASR XL Acetabular System after data showed within 5 years, 1 out of 8 patients required a second surgery, because the artificial joint did not fit. Severe pain can result from a faulty hip replacement. 

The hip implant recall affects an estimated 93,000 replacement systems and more than 29 different models of hip replacement implants.
