Infuse-Medtronic® Bone Graft®

The Infuse Bone Graft® is manufactured by Medtronic, Inc. It was initially approved for the use in lumbar spine procedures. However, Infuse Medtronic has been used in procedures considered off label, and not approved by the FDA. It is this off-label use that has lead to serious side effects, even death, when used in the cervical, neck, or spine area.

Infuse Medtronic® is a type of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) that is a man-made liquid. It is placed in-between vertebrae. When it works, BMP causes bone growth to fill in the gap between the vertebrae, which replaces the damaged disks.

Adverse Infuse Medtronic® Side Effects

The FDA has issued a safety alert pertaining to complications from Infuse Medtronic® when used off label. Complications can be serious and life threatening. They include:

•   Nerve Damage or Nerve Pain   •   Swelling Of The Neck   •   Compression Of The Airway
•   Respiratory Depression •   Infection at Surgical Site                       •   Irregular Bone Growth
•   Swelling of the Throat Tissue                 •   Death •   Difficulty Swallowing, Breathing And Speaking
•   Compression of the Neurological Structures in the Neck

The FDA reports most complications occurred between 2 and 14 days after surgery with only a few events occurring prior to the second day.
