Gardasil®
Merck & Co is the pharmaceutical company that manufactures the Gardasil vaccine for use with certain strains of human papilloma virus (HPV). Just recently the Gardasil vaccine has come under scrutiny as more recent studies link it to potentially fatal side effects.
Gardasil is marketed as a preventative against spreading HPV induced cervical cancer. Gardasil received FDA approval in 2006. Studies showed that approx. 80% of women by the age of 50 have been exposed to a number of HPV strains, so the vaccine was developed with the intent of protecting women from the age of 11 on. However the vaccine has the potential to do harm and Merck & Co did not warn of this.
Gardasil manufactured by Merck & CO has been added to the list of vaccines that the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program covers, to provide monetary aid to victims of side effects from vaccines.
Gardasil® Side Effects
Gardasil is approved by the FDA. However, it has been associated with a number of serious side effects. The number of complaints continues to grow. To date there have been more than 3,500 complaints relating to serious side effects from the Gardasil vaccination, complications have been reported, and to date eight deaths have been investigated pertaining to Gardasil.
Some of the more common side effects include:
• Blood clots • Seizure • Bells palsy • Paralysis • Guillain-Barre syndrome
Pregnant women who have had the Gardasil vaccine have reported serious side effects. Nearly 50% of pregnant women who received Merck & Co’s Gardasil vaccine had fetal abnormalities. In the most serious cases spontaneous abortion occurred.
Gardasil® Studies & Research
On July 7, 2008 CNN News reported that the CDC had received 7,802 reports of ‘adverse events’ since the approval of Gardasil, including reports of paralysis and death. According to CNN, there have been 15 deaths reported to the FDA.
In June 2006, Gardasil became the only approved vaccine to prevent precancerous or dysplastic lesions, genital warts, and cervical cancer caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) types 6, 11, 16 and 18 in girls and women nine through 26 years of age. Merck claimed their clinical trials proved the vaccine to be between 90% to 100% effective in preventing the transmission of some of the HPV strains that cause cervical cancer. Merck even claimed that Gardasil had the ‘potential to eventually eliminate most cervical cancers.’
However, many experts believe the vaccine has not been thoroughly tested to ensure its safety and there has not been enough follow up of those who have had the Gardasil vaccine to ensure it is free of side effects that could be dangerous.
