Plavix®
Plavix® is a medication used as blood thinner manufactured by Plavix, Sanofi-Aventis, and Bristol-Myer Squibb. Recent studies have directly linked Plavix® (clopidogrel bisulfate) to potentially life threatening side effects, and in the worst cases death. The manufacturers failed to satisfactorily warn of the seriousness and potentially fatal health risks associated with the use of Plavix.
Adverse Plavix® Side Effects
Plavix® is linked to a variety of side effects including,
| • Abdominal pain | • Coughing gout | • Chest pain | • Irregular heartbeat | • Pneumonia | • Severe headaches |
| • Sinus inflammation | • Bone marrow damage |
The most serious and life-threatening side effects include:
| • Ulcers | • Internal Bleeding | • Gastrointestinal Bleeding | • Bone Marrow Damage | • Cerebral Bleeding or Hemorrhage |
| • Stroke | • Heart attack | • Death | • Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) | |
Plavix® Studies
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke has stopped a portion of its stroke-prevention study because they found the combination of Plavix® and aspirin was linked to a significantly increased rate of bleeding and death versus taking aspirin alone. The Plavix® warning and stop action for Plavix-aspirin study, occurred after a data-monitoring safety board found that 6.5% of patients treated with the combination of drugs experienced a bleeding event, compared to only 3.3% for those who were taking only just aspirin.
A recent publishing by the New England Journal of Medicine stated, “Although doctors believe the combination of Plavix and aspirin should reduce the risk of a second heart attack, the combination not only does not help, but it nearly doubles the risk of death, heart attack, or stroke in people with no history of heart disease. It was also found to be associated with increased risk for moderate and severe bleeding.”
The Archives of Internal Medicine published a study conducted by the CDC, found the occurrence of life threatening bleeding events among patients treated with a combination of Plavix® and aspirin were 50% more likely to be admitted to ER compared to those that take only Warfarin.
Plavix® (clopidogrel bisulfate), is manufactured and distributed by Sanofi-Aventis and/or Bristol-Myers Squibb, which is the sixth top selling drug in the US with sales exceeding $3.8 billion dollars.
