Practice Areas

When you are injured it’s a stressful time, especially when the injuries are the result of another person’s negligence or actions. At Hughes and Coleman, our job is to help those who have been injured in Kentucky or Tennessee.

With more than a million people residing in the two states, residents of Kentucky and Tennessee are exposed to a multitude of potential accidents. Freeways, highways, and city streets pose a daily threat to residents. As the traffic grows so do the number of motor vehicle accidents.

The following is a list of practice areas in which the attorneys at Hughes and Coleman are experienced and proven. Click on an area to discover a wealth of information on each topic. If you have been affected by any of the following, contact Hughes and Coleman Injury Lawyers today for a free consultation.

Pradaxa®

Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals manufactures Pradaxa® a blood thinner or anticoagulant medication in the class of drugs called direct thrombin inhibitor, which prevents the formation of blood clots. Pradaxa® is given to patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, a condition where an irregular heartbeat increases the risk of blood clots forming in the body, which has the potential to lead to a stroke.

Pradaxa® can lead to excessive bleeding along with other complications that can lead to severe injury that can be life threatening.

Pradaxa® Side Effects

Pradaxa® has been on the U.S. only since 2010, and in that short period of time there have been numerous reports of adverse events including serious internal bleeding. If internal bleeding caused by Pradaxa® is not treated promptly it can become life-threatening.

Some patients are more susceptible to experience Pradaxa® hemorrhaging or internal bleeding. If you have one or more of these conditions you may be at greater risk of experiencing side effects.

•   If you are 75 years old or older       •   If you take medications such as aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or blood thinners
•   If you have kidney issues •   If you have recent and recurring stomach or intestinal bleeding
•   If you have a stomach ulcer

If you take Pradaxa® and experience any of the following symptoms of internal bleeding, see your doctor immediately:

•   Gums bleeding       •   Coughing up blood •   Dizziness    •   Nosebleeds frequently           •   Headaches      •   Joint pain or swelling
•   Lethargy  •   Pink or brown urine               •   Tarry stools         •   Unusual bruising or bleeding   •   Itching or skin rash
•   Vomiting that resembles blood or looks like coffee grounds •   Weakness and swelling of your hands, arms, ankles, feet, or lower legs

From October 2010 to August 2011, there were approx. 1.1 million Pradaxa® prescriptions dispensed from U.S. pharmacies.
