Qualaquin® and Fatal Bleeding

The medication Qualaquin® has been linked to serious and life-threatening bleeding reactions, including severe bleeding due to lowered platelet count, and two conditions that may result in serious kidney problems, hospitalization, and death.

What Is Qualaquin Used For?

Qualaquin is a drug specifically approved to treat a rare form of malaria caused by the parasite Plasmodium  falciparum, but it is often used “off label” by patients who suffer from night-time leg cramps. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received reports of serious side effects in patients using Qualaquin and issued a safety announcement warning against using the drug off label—specifically for people taking Qualaquin for night-time leg cramps—because users may suffer severe hematological (blood-related) side effects.

What Are the Side Effects of Qualaquin?

The FDA warned Qualaquin has been linked to severe bleeding and two similar conditions known as “hemolytic-uremic syndrome” and “thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.” These conditions are very similar and both result in a dramatically reduced blood platelet count in the body. Platelets play a key role in the blood clotting process, as they release hormones necessary for the clotting process to occur.

If you or someone you know took Qualaquin for night-time leg cramps and was diagnosed with either of these conditions or suffered from severe bleeding, contact our law firm immediately for a free and confidential evaluation of your case.

What Is “Off-Label” Use?

Off-label use is when someone uses a drug to treat a condition the FDA has not approved the drug to treat. For example, some anti-anxiety medications are used off label to treat nausea, because the drugs have a calming effect on the stomach.

What Are the Symptoms of Qualaquin Complications?

Symptoms of potential health problems caused by Qualaquin use include:
