How Can We Help?

Boniva®

If you are one of almost 10 million Americans who have osteoporosis, you may have been prescribed Boniva to strengthen your bones and decrease your chances of bone fractures. Unfortunately, some people who take Boniva experience serious side effects while trying to combat brittle bones. If you have suffered an injured jaw or a thigh bone fracture due to little or no trauma, you may have a case.

What is Boniva®?

Boniva is a prescription pill used to treat osteoporosis, a condition which causes bones to weaken and become brittle, leading to an increase in bone fractures. Unfortunately, the class of drugs that Boniva belongs to, called bisphosphonates, can cause painful side effects like “dead jaw” or thigh bone fractures when taken at an early age or for a long period of time.

The two most worrisome potential side effects of taking Boniva are “dead jaw syndrome” and abnormal femur fractures.

Osteonecrosis of the Jaw

Osteonecrosis of the jaw, or ONJ, occurs when a portion of the jaw bone becomes exposed and is not covered by the gums. This exposure causes the jaw bone to lose blood flow, which results in the weakening and eventual death of the jaw bone. This process can be extremely painful to those who suffer from ONJ, because the area that is affected can often become infected and swollen. Patients may experience loose teeth and drainage from the gums and, in severe cases, may even require removal of portions of the jaw which were effected by ONJ.

Atypical Femur Fractures

Studies have also been performed regarding Boniva usage and atypical femur fractures, or fractures of the thigh bone. The femur is one of the largest bones in the human body, and normally withstands large amounts of trauma. Taking Boniva may cause fractures of the femur, even when there is little impact or even none at all. Many lawsuits have been filed alleging a link between the drug and an increase in these injuries, even if combined with other contributing causes.

What Other Side Effects Might I Experience While Taking Boniva?

Other possible dangerous side effects from taking Boniva include:

  • Esophagus issues (the tube between the mouth and stomach that carries food) such as pain, inflammation, or bleeding ulcers
  • Low calcium levels, which can cause spasms or cramps in the muscles and tingling or numbness in the fingers and/or toes
  • Severe, debilitating pain in the bones, joints, and/or muscles
  • Atrial fibrillation, resulting in irregular/rapid heartbeat

Other brands in the same class of drugs as Boniva may cause similar side effects. These drugs include:

  • Actonel®
  • Aredia®
  • Atelvia®
  • Bonefos®
  • Didronel®
  • Fosamax®
  • Reclast®
  • Skelid®
  • Zometa®

Lawsuits for bisphosphonates like Boniva have resulted in large awards for plaintiffs who were adversely affected by the drug. In 2012, a woman was awarded $10.45 million in damages for developing osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) after taking Zometa, a prescription medication in the same drug class as Boniva. $10 million of these damages were punitive, which means that they were meant to punish the manufacturers of the drug.
