SIDE EFFECTS THAT CAN LAST A LIFETIME
Yaz® or Yasmin is a popular birth control pill that was advertised and marketed to women and teens. Yaz® was created by the pharmaceutical company Berlex, which was eventually purchased by Bayer Healthcare.
This birth control pill proved to have harmful side effects that can cause a lifetime of pain and unpleasant effects. Some of the side effects include heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots.
In 2012, the FDA was alerted of these side effects. The FDA then required Bayer Healthcare to provide new warning labels alerting consumers about these effects.
The intention was to warn consumers about these side effects, however, the warning occurred after many women and teens had already suffered from the effects.
Some of the severe side effects that you need to watch for include:
- Blood clots
- Kidney problems
- Gallbladder disease
- Heart attack
- High blood pressure
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Difficulty breathing
- Pancreatitis
- Heart condition such as irregular heart beat
- Jaundice
- Pulmonary embolism
- Strokes
In some severe cases, Yaz® has even resulted in death.
One of the most concerning side effects of Yaz® is blood clots. This birth control medication has been shown to cause multiple types of blood clots in different locations of the body. In fact, Health Canada, in 2013, revealed that 23 Canadian women have died from blood clots after taking Yaz® .
In 2011, articles published in the British Medical Journal reported that women who took birth control pills with drospirenone, like Yaz® or Yasmin, were two to three times more likely to develop blood clots.
The most common of these blood clots is deep vein thrombosis or “DVT”.
In 2008, the FDA determined that the manufacturer made false claims about the birth control and the company did NOT provide ample information to consumers. When the drug was marketed to consumers, the manufacturer told consumers that the above side effects, including the blood clots, would only occur if the patient smoked while taking the birth control.
It was later discovered that even those women and teens who did not smoke were developing and experiencing the side effects.
In fact, the FDA warned Bayer Healthcare that their commercials were misleading and often downplayed the actual effects of the birth control making the drug seem safer than it actually was.
In addition to that, in 2009, the FDA discovered poor practices at the manufacturing plant located in Germany. The warning letter sent to Bayer Healthcare stated that the facility was dirty and there was no testing performed on the final products.
